State
Rep. Deborah Blumer joined Senate President Robert Travaglini, representatives
from the Romney Administration, members of the Early Education for
All (EEA) Campaign and the Massachusetts Association for the Education
of Young Children (MAEYC), and preschool children from the Ellis
Memorial Children's Center at the State House to recognize the 2006
"Week of the Young Child."
Travaglini read to the children in attendance, officially acknowledging
the week's celebration.
The Week of the Young Child, established by the National Association
for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in 1971, highlights
the importance of families, early childhood professionals, and communities
working together to support every child's healthy development and
early learning.
Blumer demonstrated her commitment to Massachusetts' young children
by wearing a commemorative teal-colored ribbon. EEA has distributed
5,000 teal colored commemorative ribbons across the state to commemorate
the Week of the Young Child, asking people to help spread the word
that high-quality early education - at home, in the classroom, and
in the community - prepares children for success in school and life.
In honor of The Week of the Young Child, many state senators and
representatives are visiting early education programs in their communities
to read books to the children.
EEA recently celebrated unanimous House passage of An Act Relative
to Early Education and Care (H.4755). This landmark legislation
creates the Massachusetts Universal Pre-Kindergarten program, a
voluntary high-quality early education program for all preschool-aged
children and their families in the Commonwealth. The bill should
be voted on in Senate in the coming weeks.
The Early Education for All Campaign, an initiative of Strategies
for Children, Inc. and organizers of the event, is a coalition of
leaders from business, early childhood, organized labor, education,
religion, health care and philanthropy working together dedicated
to make high-quality early childhood education available to every
three-, four-, and five-year old in Massachusetts.
Strategies for Children is a non-profit organization specializing
in public policy, advocacy and constituency building. The mission
of Strategies for Children is to improve the well-being of children
and families by moving their issues to the top of the agendas of
communities, states and the nation.
