Science Fair Projects

Science Fair ProjectsScience fair projects are a very fun and hands-on way for students to learn, and teach, about science. It can be tricky to choose a great topic for a science fair project, though. There are so many interesting things out in the world that a student may find interesting. There is geology, botany, zoology, human anatomy, food science, environmental science, astronomy, meteorology, oceanography, engineering, and more. Any of these sciences are great starts for science fair projects. The problem is choosing the right topic.

Here are some tips for choosing a great science fair project topic. After all, you need to start somewhere:

• Choose a topic that interests you (or your child). After all, if you are not interested enough in a topic, then you will not be able to spend hours working on a science fair project for that topic.
• Make sure that you choose a topic that not only interests you, but challenges you, as well. It is great if you start studying a topic and it makes you even more curious about other things, as well.
• Once you have chosen your topic, you need to choose one single aspect about that topic that you want to explore. Make sure that you choose an aspect that is broad enough that you can find lots of information and study it in depth, but narrow enough that you can research it in the time available.
• Make sure that your experiment is testable. Your experiment should not be “why my dog likes to eat popcorn” – this is not testable. You cannot ask your dog why he likes popcorn. You can, however, test which dog foods your dog prefers (based on whether or not he cleans the bowl). This is a simple example to get an important and difficult point across.
• Allow yourself enough time to complete your experiment. You are not going to have time to invent a way to stop pollution, for instance.
• If you cannot think of any topics, why not check real world issues – check your newspaper or radio or books, etc. Ask a question that has not yet been answered.
• Consider the costs. You do not want to have a science fair project that is going to empty your wallet just to test it.
• Before embarking upon a large-in-size science fair project, think about how you will transport it from place to place.
• You can also ask other students what they are working on or ask about science fair projects of the past. Do not copy these, but you definitely can get ideas for your own science fair project.
