To
let you know what we mean by lesson ideas, I chose as an example
a simple, mini review of American history appropriate for fourth
to eighth grade students.
The lesson is that a good understanding of the past is vital to
understanding the present world as well as what may come in the
future. With your lesson ideas students need to be able to appreciate
the lesson and absorb it. With this particular lesson idea is that
the past and the record of history is a chronological record. Above
all your students need to learn the historical concepts of time
and chronology, of cause and effect, of continuity and change, of
major historical events and time periods, the impact of religion
in politics and culture, and basic philosophy.
The purpose of this lesson idea is to review historical events
and eras of United States history from the discovery of the “new
world” to the present. And as a lesson idea, one lesson is
certainly a quick amount of time to cover all of that. You may want
to break down this formula specific to one of its elements as future
lesson ideas.
It has been found that through the arts: crafts, drama, music,
and dance, etc. students can form a better comprehension of the
contributions of individuals in history as well as the importance
of cultural groups. This lesson lesson idea is used to culminate
all the units that will be studied during that year.
This type of history lesson ideas have a four-part objective:
First: The children must know that life as we understand it in
the present, was influenced by our physical environment, our heritage,
and cultural interchange.
Second: They must learn that people of many races, cultures, and
religions have made contributions to American history.
Third: this lesson idea wants to help mold a sense of pride and
appreciation in the children, for their country and what it took
to get up where we are.
Fourth: We want them, in the course if any lesson idea, to have
the ability to work well together in groups and independently.
Lesson ideas, the action begins:
First: Make a time line of major time periods and interesting facts
about those time periods. The children can work together in groups
or independently.
Second: The children should pick an area they are especially interested
in and write and/or act out a skit or recite a speech (Ex. Gettysburg
Address).
Third: If you choose, the students can make a background and costumes
reflecting the time period if they choose to do a skit. Performing
puppet shows is another good method especially for shy or younger
students.
Fourth: Make dioramas or murals. These are best when done in small
groups. Nothing beats the hands on approach.
Fifth: Teach them songs and dances from different time periods.
Patriotic songs will only be learned if they are required by your
curriculum.
